In the aftermath of September 11, 2001 we promised never to forget the events of that day. New Hampshire has held a memorial stair climb each of the last 6 years and the ‘Never Forget’ NH 9/11 StairClimb continues that tradition. Each participant will climb in remembrance carrying the name of one of the 343 firefighters lost that day. The climb is a physically demanding, 7-lap course through Northeast Delta Dental Stadium to reach the equivalent of 110 stories.
FDNY lost 343 firefighters, the Port Authority Police Department lost 37 officers, NYPD lost 23 officers and private EMS agencies lost 8 EMTs on 9/11. Many personnel working at Ground Zero post 9/11 also incurred illnesses and injuries. According to Dr. David Prezant, FDNY’s Chief Medical Officer, over 7,000 FDNY Firefighters and EMTs have been treated for a 9/11 injury or illness and over 1,100 of them have developed cancer caused by 9/11 toxins.
According to the NY Post on March 26, 2017:
“Last September, the FDNY added 17 names to a list of Bravest who have died of 9/11-related illness, bringing the total to 127. But the total number of all 9/11 responders, including firefighters, who have been diagnosed with WTC-linked cancers now exceeds 5,100, records show.”
